De Stendig, in 1966 ontworpen door de legendarische Italiaanse ontwerper Massimo Vignelli, blijft een van de beste voorbeelden van modernistisch design uit de jaren zestig, met twee van de meest iconische creaties van de beweging: het Zwitserse lettertype Helvetica en de Grid. Kort na de lancering werd de kalender opgenomen in de permanente collectie van het MoMA in New York, waar hij tot op de dag van vandaag nog steeds te zien is.
Vignelli's ontwerp is eenvoudig maar gedurfd, gelithografeerd op grote vellen van 122 x 92 cm die met drie met de hand geponste oogjes aan elkaar zijn gebonden. De pagina's zijn afwisselend van kleur, met de oneven maanden als zwarte tekst op wit, en de even maanden als witte tekst op zwart. De vellen zijn uitneembaar en kunnen aan het eind van elke maand worden verwijderd. De vellen van de vorige maanden zijn uitstekend inpakpapier.

Upcycle old sheets
Once the month is over, sheets can be detached from the calendar along a perforated seam that runs along the top. Previous months’ sheets make excellent wrapping paper — we recommend rolling them up and saving them for Christmas.
Space and scale
At the heart of the Stendig is a remarkable interplay between space and scale. At 122x92cm, it exceeds the typical size of a calendar, and is a feature of any room. Set within this are large Helvetica numerals that enumerate the days of the month.
The two digit dates are tightly and precisely kerned, such that the two characters just touch. The negative space left in and around these kissing numerals was of as much interest to Vignelli as the numbers themselves: the shape of the number 23, in particular, he considered graphic perfection.
